Chase College Checking Account FAQ

1. How do I open a Chase College Checking account?

You can either visit a local branch or do it online, via the link you'll find directly on Chase's website or when you click the "APPLY NOW" button on this page.

2. What documents do I need to provide to open a Chase College Checking account?

You will need to provide your social security number (SSN), a valid student ID or proof of enrollment/acceptance, college name, expected graduation date, and a valid driver's license or state ID.

3. How old do I need to be to open a Chase College Checking account?

The Chase College CheckingSM account is available for students aged between 17 and 24.

4. Can non-U.S. students open a Chase College Checking account?

Yes, non-U.S. students can open it in any Chase local branch. A non-U.S. student needs to bring their passport with photo, together with the Student INS I-20 or ICE I-20 form or the DS-2019 form. Chase will also ask for address, proof of college/university student status, and expected graduation date.

5. How do I take advantage of the $100 bonus offer?

If you apply for a Chase College CheckingSM account by October 8, 2020, and complete 10 qualifying transactions within 60 days of account opening, you will receive a $100 bonus within 10 business days.

Qualifying transactions include debit card purchases, online bill payments, checks paid, Chase QuickDepositSM, Chase QuickPay® with Zelle®, or direct deposits. Your direct deposit needs to be an electronic deposit of your paycheck, pension or government benefits (such as Social Security) from your employer or the government.

Do note that, if you close your account within 6 months after opening, those same $100 will be deducted from your balance.

6. What happens with my account after I graduate?

Your Chase College CheckingSM account continues to work the same, but you will start paying the monthly fee of $6, unless you make at least 1 direct deposit (an ACH credit, payroll, pension or a government benefit such as Social Security) to your account or keep an average daily balance of at least $5,000.

7. What is Chase Savings?

Chase SavingsSM is a savings account, which helps you save money while in college or afterward. Its $5 monthly fee can be waived if you:

  • keep a balance of $300+ in your savings account at the beginning of each day, OR
  • have $25 or more in total Autosave or other repeating automatic transfers from your personal Chase checking account or Chase Liquid® Card (available only through chase.com or Chase Mobile®), OR
  • link your Chase College CheckingSM account to this account for Overdraft Protection, OR
  • have an account owner who is an individual younger than 18, OR
  • Have a linked Chase Better Banking® Checking, Chase Premier CheckingSM, Chase Premier Plus CheckingSM, Chase SapphireSM Checking, or Chase Private Client CheckingSM account.

So, as a student, all you need to do to have the monthly fee waived is link your College CheckingSM to your Chase SavingsSM account. This way, you'll be covered in case of an overdraft, as, instead of being charged a fee, Chase will pull the money from your savings account, and transfer it to your checking.

8. What are the costs and benefits of the Chase Freedom® Student credit card?

The Chase Freedom® Student credit card has no annual fees, and comes with a variable APR of 14.99%. This credit card allows you to earn 1% cash back on all your purchases, and redeem rewards through the Chase Ultimate Rewards program. It also offers a $50 bonus if you make a purchase within 3 months of account opening.

There are other benefits, including free credit score, special partner offers, enhanced account protection, and a $20 reward for each account anniversary.

9. What is Chase QuickDeposit?

Chase QuickDepositSM is a convenient, easy way to deposit checks without having to visit a local branch. Using your Chase mobile app, you can simply enter the amount to deposit, take pictures of your check, either manually or via the "Auto Capture" feature, and, finally, submit the deposit.

Yours funds will be available the next business day if you submit a deposit before 11PM.

It's recommended that you keep your check for a few days after you've deposited, to make sure your QuickDeposit has been accepted. You can destroy the check later.

10. How does Chase "Refer a Friend" work?

With Chase Refer a Friend, you can earn $50 each time a friend of yours opens a qualifying Chase account (New Chase Total Checking®  and/or New Chase SavingsSM or a New Chase College CheckingSM).

In case your friends are interested in another Chase checking account, they should talk directly with a banker to see whether it'd be possible to use the coupon.

You can invite 10 people per year, meaning you can earn up to $500 per year in bonuses only by having your friends or family members open a Chase checking account!

While you won't get informed when your friends opens an account due to confidentiality, you will see your bonus appear in your Chase checking account as "$50 Refer a Friend bonus". The funds should be deposited into your checking account within 20 business days, provided both your and your friend's checking accounts are active and in good standing.

Note: People you invite must use the link you shared, otherwise, you won't receive the bonus.
