BB&T Senior Checking Account

Many unique perks for senior citizens are offered with the BB&T Senior Checking Account!

securely on the bank's website

The Senior Checking by BB&T is a senior checking account for elderly citizens looking for a simple and convenient way to manage their money. This checking account offers the same benefits as the bank's other accounts. These perks include digital money management tools, free online statements, debit card, and access to BB&T's ATMs.

If you decide to open this account, you'll also get free wallet-style checks or a special discount on a design of your choice. That said - and unlike other BB&T's checking accounts - you'll be required to deposit $100 to open the account, instead of the usual $50.

Since this is a senior checking account, targeting elderly people, the bank also offers 1 penalty-free CD withdrawal in case one has to access their money due to a medical emergency. Given that this is the only feature that distinguishes this senior checking account offer from other offers [from the bank], you might as well consider other ones [if you decide to do business with BB&T].

BB&T Senior Checking Account FAQ

1. How can I apply for BB&T Senior Checking account?

You can apply online, in person by visiting a local branch or by phone at 800-BANK-BBT (800-2265228). You can also follow the link available on this page to go to the BB&T website, and apply there directly.

2. What will I need to apply for a BB&T Senior Checking account?

To apply for a BB&T Senior Checking account, you will need to provide the following information:

  • Your Social Security Number,
  • Your date of birth,
  • Your address,
  • A government-issued ID.
  • Contact information (email and phone number).
3. What are the age requirements to open a BB&T Senior Checking?

You need to be 55 or older to be eligible to open a BB&T Senior Checking.

4. Can I add co-applicants to my account?

Yes, but you can add only one co-applicant to your Senior Checking at the time of application for the Senior Checking. This person will become a co-owner and share the same responsibility of your account.

5. What is a direct deposit?

A direct deposit is any electronic transactions made to your account. These transfers might include paychecks, employer-reimbursed expenses, governments benefits, tax refunds, interests or similar.

One of the options to have the $10 monthly maintenance fee waived on your BB&T Senior Checking account is to receive $500+ in direct deposits each month. The alternative is to keep at least $1,000 in your monthly balance.

6. Does the BB&T Senior Checking help me save for retirement?

Not directly, i.e. it is not an interest-bearing account. You can, however, use BB&T's tools to plan for your savings. They offer a "Am I Saving Enough for Retirement" calculator, where you can see where you're standing, but also schedule an appointment with their bankers to help you establish savings goals.

We'd suggest checking out their "Planning for Retirement" page, with more products, services, and resources that might help you.

You can also set, among others, retirement savings goals through U by BB&T to prepare for future expenses, and then track progress over time.

7. How can I avoid early CD withdrawal fees for medical emergencies?

As the owner of the BB&T Senior Checking, you can withdraw funds for medical emergencies only once without early withdrawal penalties if:

  • the initial deposit, and any additional deposit have been made at least 7 calendar days prior to withdrawal,
  • there have been no partial withdrawals for 6 calendar days preceding the withdrawal.

Otherwise, BB&T will charge you early withdrawal fees, which are determined based on CD terms:

  • Certificates of Deposits with a term of less than 3 months: all interest that would have been earned or $25, whichever is greater.
  • Certificates of Deposit with a term of 3-12 months: an amount equal to 3 months simple interest earned on the principal amount withdrawn or $25, whichever is greater.
  • Certificates of Deposit with a term of 13-23 months: an amount equal to 6 months simple interest earned on the principal amount withdrawn or $25, whichever is greater
  • Certificates of Deposit with a term 24 months or greater: an amount equal to 12 months simple interest on the principal amount withdrawn or $25, whichever is greater.
8. What is U by BB&T?

U by BB&T is a money management tool BB&T customers can use for daily banking.

It includes a customizable dashboard, from where you can access your profile, personal information, account alerts, previous transaction receipts, and credit card rewards. You can also schedule an appointment with a BB&T banker via the dashboard.

U by BB&T is a quick and convenient way to make transfers, pay bills, view activity history and online statements, set up account alerts, plan for savings, manage card activity, and more!

Finally, from your U by BB&T, you'll also be able to access BB&T Deals, a rewards program with many cashback offers and deals!

9. How do I earn cash back through BB&T Deals?

You can access BB&T Deals via your desktop or mobile phone by logging in to your account, and going to the BB&T Deals section. From there, you'll be able to see available offers, and add those you like to your cart. You can redeem a deal by making a purchase using your BB&T credit or debit card, and that's it! Rewards will be automatically deposited in your account. Remember: the more you shop, the more offers you receive - the more potential to earn!

10. How can I personalize my BB&T debit card?

BB&T lets you personalize your debit card using a photo of your choice. It can be a photo from their gallery, your profile picture or a photo from your personal collection. If you choose to upload a photo from your device, the process of card production and delivery will take longer as the photo needs to go through review and approval, so you can wait for up to 8 days.

Card personalization is free of charge, and you can change your BB&T card design when you want. However, each time you personalize your debit card, a new card number will be generated, and the newly personalized debit card will replace the old one. So, if you store your debit card number somewhere for easier payments or similar (Amazon or PayPal, for example), you might want to keep this in mind, so you update your card information across such platforms on time.
