The Connexus Credit Union Innovative Checking Account is a free checking account for Connexus members looking for a simple banking solution that offers them all the basics they need for daily money management.

With enhanced security features protecting you against identity theft and fraud, you can use Connexus digital banking tools safely to pay bills from, send money to your friends and family, make mobile check deposits, and monitor your balance 24/7.

Connexus Telephone Banking also lets you quickly check your account balance and transfer funds between your Connexus accounts, by simply dialing (800) 438-2747 or (715) 847-4701 whenever you want. There's also a virtual financial assistant, Connexus Assist, which you can reach out to through text message or Amazon Alexa. The assistant can answer your account-related questions, and do some basic banking for you, whether it be checking your balance, paying off your loan, finding an ATM, or learning about finances and money management.

Using your free Visa Debit card, you'll be able to access any ATM with no Connexus charges. Other ATM owners may, however, charge you a fee when you use out-of-network ATMs, but, given that you'll have access to over 54,000 in-network ATMs completely free of charge, there's no need to worry about additional costs.

Even though the Connexus Innovative Checking seems like a good checking account offer, there are many better ones, even with Connexus. 1. How do I open a Connexus Innovative Checking Account?

You can apply online, using the link available when you click on the "APPLY NOW" button on this page. You'll be taken to the Connexus website, where you'll be able to complete an application form. If you're not already a member of the Connexus Credit Union, you'll have to join them first.

2. Who can become a member of Connexus Credit Union?

You can join Connexus if you belong to one of the eligible groups:

If you don't belong to any of the first 3 group categories, becoming a member of the Connexus Association would be your only solution to join Connexus. This requires a $5 donation, as a contribution to financial education services provided to those in need.

3. What is Shared Branching?

Shared Branching is a network of credit unions that work together to allow members of one participating credit union to make select transactions in the branch of another participating credit union.

Connexus is part of the CO-OP Shared Branch network, giving you access to over 6,000 shared branches, where you can make a number of transaction as if you were at a Connexus branch.

4. How do I use Shared Branching?

First of all, you need to find a shared CO-OP branch. Upon arrival, let the teller know you’re a member of Connexus Credit Union, give them your member number, and provide a valid government-issued ID. Once they've verified your identity, you'll be able to make:

  • loan payments, and loan advances,
  • deposits, and withdrawals,
  • money orders, and cashier's check orders,
  • balance inquiries, and history printouts.
5. Can I open an Innovative Checking at a shared branch?

No, you can't open a new Connexus checking account at any shared branch location. You can only open a checking account with Connexus online, over the phone or at a Connexus branch.

6. Is Overdraft Protection included in the Innovative Checking Account?

Yes, there's Connexus Privilege Pay, which automatically applies to your checking account. This overdraft service authorizes and pays your check, ACH, or Bill Pay transaction, even if it overdraws your account. However, even with this feature, you may still be charged an overdraft fee (which is still lower than what others charge). But, if you want to eliminate the risk of being charged $29.95, especially if you overdraw your account by only a few dollars, you can also consider:

  • Opening a Connexus savings account, and linking it to your Innovative Checking. This service is free. You can link your Connexus savings and checking accounts by calling Connexus at 800.845.5025.

  • Applying for an Overdraft Line of Credit, the credit limit ranging between $300 and $1,000, with an interest rate of 18% APR. You can apply either online or by calling Connexus at 800.845.5025
7. How do I use Connexus Assist?

You can access Connexus Assist through text message, by connecting your device, or through Amazon Alexa, by linking your digital banking in Skill Settings, and setting up your voice passcode. 

You can ask Connexus Assist to answer some questions or do banking tasks for you. Here are some things you can ask Connexus Assist:

  • to check balances in your Connexus accounts,

  • to check loan payment due dates,

8. What is Spending Activity Tool?

Connexus Digital Banking Spending Activity Tool shows a breakdown of your monthly spending activities grouped in different categories for a better overview.

In case you need to save money, the tools can help you decide where to cut down spending by giving you insight into your spending habits, so you can better organize your money, and make better financial decisions. You can also compare spending from the current month with the one from the previous month, which enables you to see how your purchasing habits evolve, and whether there's a particular category that you're spending too much or little in, and so on.

You can access the Spending Activity Tool using your PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone device free of charge.

9. What account notifications can I set up with my Connexus Innovative Checking?

There are many account notifications you can turn on from your Connexus Digital Banking account if you'd like to receive alerts and flags related to your account, activity, and budget. Currently, you can receive:

  • Balance Summary Alerts: sent either daily or weekly.
  • Balance Alerts: to know whether your balance falls behind a certain threshold,
  • Budget Category Exceeded Alerts: if using the Digital Banking Budget tool, these alerts will notify you if you spend too much in a certain category,
  • Budget Exceeded Alerts: if using the Digital Banking Budget tool, you'll know when you exceed the total budgeted for spending for that  month,
  • Check Cleared Alerts: alert criteria can be per check number and/or amounts, so you know when an outgoing check has been cleared.
  • Debit Card Purchase Alerts: if you make purchase of a selected amount using your Connexus debit card,
  • Digital Banking Access Alerts: you'll receive alerts each time you access your Digital Banking account (great for fraud monitoring purposes),
  • Goal Completed Alerts: sent to celebrate each time you achieve your Savings Goal,
  • Goal Endangered Alert: sent when you're approaching a Savings Goal deadline, but haven't really approached the desired savings amount.
  • Insufficient Funds Alerts: in case you don't have enough money in your Connexus account(s),
  • Loan Payment Due Alerts: you can enter the number of days before and/or after a loan payment due date, so that you don't forget to pay off your loan,
