For those looking for a premium and interest-bearing checking account packed with benefits, the Premium Interest Checking® Account might be the solution. It comes with many perks, such as higher interest rates, ATM and other fee waivers, loan discounts, free checks, digital banking, and more!

Designed primarily for those who can keep a higher balance, this checking account offers better rates as the amount of money held in the account increases - up to 0.05%. Also, in addition to earning interest, account holders can earn cash back rewards through Zions Amazing Deals.

The possibility to have the monthly fee waived makes the offer even more attractive. Usually, premium checking accounts offer benefits others have to pay for - and, with the $20 monthly fee waived, Premium Interest Checking Account® owners can enjoy many perks offered by Zions Bank free of charge!

On the other hand, if you travel a lot or live outside Idaho or Utah, you might spend more money on outside-of-network ATM fees as you only get 3 free withdrawals per month - not to mention there are only around 200 Zions Bank ATMs in total. So, while this offer might seem interesting at first, you might want to shop some more.

Zions Bank Premium Interest Checking® Account FAQ

1. What do I need to open Premium Interest Checking®?

You need to be at least 18 years old, and provide your:

  • name,
  • home address,
  • email address,
  • date of birth,
  • Social Security number,
  • phone number,
  • name of employer,
  • occupation, and
  • account information for a deposit - you will need to make an initial $50 deposit to open the  Premium Interest Checking® account.
2. How do I fund my account?

You can make the initial $50 deposit by transferring money electronically from a Zions Bank or another bank's account. You can also write a check or complete a wire transfer using some alternative way of payment.

3. What is a combined deposit and consumer loan balance?

A combined deposit balance incudes the total amount of money you may have across different consumer accounts with Zions Bank. These accounts include checking, savings, money market, certificates of deposit (CD), and individual retirement accounts (IRAs).

A combined deposit and consumer loan balance includes the money available in your consumer accounts, as well as the amounts you've borrowed from Zions Bank. Eligible consumer loans include auto, credit card, credit line, home equity, and installment loans. Mortgage loans are not included.

In order to have your monthly fee waived, you need to keep a $10,000 combined deposit balance or a $25,000 combined deposit and personal loan balance each statement month.

4. What are premium rates?

Premium rates are, simply put, better rates offered to Zions Bank's customers with several interest-bearing accounts linked to their Premium Interest Checking®. These interest-bearing accounts might be a checking, savings, money market, and/or CD.

5. When do I start earning interest?

You will start earning interest as soon as the initial deposit has been processed, which usually happens the same or next business day following receipt.

6. What is the difference between interest rates and APY?

Interest rates apply on your balance (the principal), and it's how much you earn on it over a period of time. Simply put, if you have $1,000 with the interest rate of 15%, you will earn $150/year.

Annual Percentage Yield or APY is also how much you gain, including compound interest, which is calculated on the principal and the interest accumulated over the previous period. This is why APY is usually higher than the interest rate. APY is the real rate of return on your deposit. The more frequently interest is compounded, the better return will be - as it adds up to previous amounts which are higher thanks to compounding.

7. How can I earn more interest on my balance?

Zions Banks gives you the option to open a money market account at the time of application for the Premium Interest Checking® account. Zions Bank's Money Market account has no monthly fees, but requires a $500 minimum deposit to open. However, it has competitive variable interest rates, which are higher than on the Premium Interest Checking®, and can go up to 0.10%.

8. How can I order discounted checks?

You must order them through Zions Bank if you want to get a discount. You can do so online, in your local branch or by contacting Zions Bank's customer support center at 801-974-8800.
